Validity of some destinations?[edit]

Firstly, this is a great article idea and execution.

I just have a small criticism. Should locations discovered by Portugal, but never colonized by Portugal feature? e.g. Labrador and Newfoundland?

w:Labrador (for example) is stated as being named by Portuguese sailers, but there is no reference to a dedicated Portuguese colony being established. ('New France' being the first recorded colony in the area). Andrewssi2 (talk) 04:32, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

  • IMHO, as their Portuguese names have endured, they merit inclusion. Let's tweak their descriptions accordingly. I must admit some bias, as I'm a Lusophone Brazilian dude and these are my cultural roots. Ibaman (talk) 04:55, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think they're worth mentioning, even if not described in detail, because the Portuguese were the first Europeans (of the modern age, as a Scandinavian I know there were others before ;)) visiting the area. In the Dutch Empire article I also mentioned Australia whose shores was first explored (by Europeans) and places named by Abel Tasman and others from the Dutch East India Company, even as no colony was established. --Ypsilon (talk) 05:06, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Let's take'em all to Guide status, shall we. Ibaman (talk) 05:14, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Sure. The destination points in the Portuguese article are nearing completion; the following step is to add other sections for specialties that can be found in the Portuguese Empire from calçada portuguesa to pastéis de nata. --Ypsilon (talk) 05:23, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I agree with a brief mention of places Portuguese sailors sailed to but Portugal didn't conquer, but let's be careful about words like "discovered". First Nations people, as the Canadians call them, discovered Labrador long before Europeans came to these shores. Ikan Kekek (talk) 08:55, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I'm on it. You give me the opportunity to boast actually, I can trace Native Brazilian ancestry from my father's side, and am naturally inclined to give careful consideration to such points of cultural sensibility. Ibaman (talk) 12:48, 21 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I do feel that although such locations do belong in Portuguese history they were never actually part of the Portuguese Empire. It would be preferable to list them under a seperate section at least.
I remember walking around Macau and Malacca in Malaysia, and having a real sense the Portuguese Empire was there. It would be great to be clear on that in this article Andrewssi2 (talk) 23:13, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────Should we have something on Taiwan then? I'm not sure if the Portuguese set up an colony on Taiwan like the Dutch did, but the original name in which it was first known to Westerners was Ilha Formosa, which is clearly of Portuguese origin. I did't really study this part, don't readily recall, but can vaguely remember that Taipei's Portuguese name is "Taipé" and Guangzhou is "Cantão" (a twist on "Guangdong"). Let's research and add as appropriate. Ibaman (talk) 00:37, 25 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
