Regions[edit]

Why are four sub-regions being created for a region that only contains two city articles? --Traveler100 (talk) 12:50, 21 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Un-regionify[edit]

San Luis Potosi does not need to be divided into regions with separate topics. The only significant region in the state is the Huasteca Potosina. Centro is simply badly named and confusing since it refers to the state's capital region, which is only significant for the city of San Luis Potosi. This looks a proper mess as it is now. Anybody have thoughts? Mrkstvns (talk) 18:02, 4 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There are now ten city articles for this region, 8 of which are listed in this article. While the subregions were clearly created before they were needed, is this one where our coverage has potential to grow? Ground Zero (talk) 12:54, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

San Luis Potosí[edit]

I moved the article name to match the article title spelling but the double redirects still need to be fixed. Nicole Sharp (talk) 17:47, 16 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I moved the article back to the original spelling until an administrator can fix the redirects and move the pages back to the corrected spellings. Both this page and San Luis Potosí should be moved to the spellings using the acute. Nicole Sharp (talk) 00:09, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You could fix the redirects and links. That's not a job reserved for administrators. Ikan Kekek (talk) 03:05, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think that Nicole Sharp believes that administrators can make some automatic fix to correct the redirects and links. If there is one, I don't know what it is. I always make the corrections manually when I move or merge an article. Ground Zero (talk) 03:33, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Check "Wikivoyage:Travellers' pub#San Luis Potosi" for additional discussion on this problem. Wikivoyage is missing the ReplaceText Extension (special:replacetext) which needs to be added by an administrator. This will allow automatically replacing all links on all pages to the new target. Without the missing extension, it is very difficult and time-consuming to manage page title changes that affect multiple pages since then each page has to be edited manually one by one (which could be hundreds or even thousands of pages for a popular page). Nicole Sharp (talk) 12:17, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I don't understand what that is, so it is not something I would be comfortable implementing. Another administrator more au fait with coding might be able to help. @SHB2000:? Ground Zero (talk) 12:27, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It seems very easy to cause disasters by that tool: 'Once a text replace is done, it is not directly undoable; though you can always run a "reverse" replace, replacing the new string with the original string.' That reverse replace isn't limited to the original changes, so done hastily to correct an error the risk of disaster is even bigger. One gets a list to check, but it doesn't show much context. –LPfi (talk) 13:18, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think what Wikimedia Commons uses might be the MassEditRegex Extension (special:masseditregex) instead.  It is a bit frightening to mass-edit many (hundreds or thousands) of pages all at once, since if you make a mistake, all of the pages will be changed.  I haven't had any problems with it on Wikimedia Commons though.  To prevent widespread vandalism, the tool can be limited to only trusted users. Nicole Sharp (talk) 14:28, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
What Wikimedia Commons is using isn't a MediaWiki Extension but a custom JavaScript that performs the same task: "commons:help:VisualFileChange.js". Nicole Sharp (talk) 14:35, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It's basically a text replace tool, though one I've always been skeptical about for reasons mentioned by LPfi – I think it's far far easier and less risky to manually replace all the links. --SHB2000 (talk | contribs | meta) 21:39, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

San Luis Potosi[edit]

If "San Luis Potosi" is the preferred name for Wikivoyage in English, then the article title should be renamed from "San Luis Potosí" to "San Luis Potosi" and the page filename should remain as "San Luis Potosi". The Spanish-language name should then be in parentheses and italicized: "San Luis Potosi (Spanish: San Luis Potosí)". Most toponyms in English do not use diacritics, but diacritics are often optionally included. Checking the page names on English Wikivoyage for other Mexican states, only "San Luis Potosi" does not include an optional diacritic, so "San Luis Potosí" (with an acute) should be the preferred spelling on English Wikivoyage for consistency with the English-language spellings used on Wikivoyage for other Mexican states. Nicole Sharp (talk) 12:35, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are correct, but I am not checking that now. Only twenty mainspace pages link to here, so they can be changed manually. I didn't find any double redirects. I would do the relinking by hand, and that doesn't require admin privileges. –LPfi (talk) 13:25, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The state capital has two dozen links to correct. The double redirects are to the move target and for the airport. The former don't need to be changed, the latter is just one edit. Some 50 articles in total; a bit tedious but doable. –LPfi (talk) 13:32, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't mind sometimes doing rote manual edits but it takes time that I have to set aside for as a Wikimedia volunteer. Nicole Sharp (talk) 14:45, 17 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
