Archiving my talk page

[edit]

@Ikan Kekek: Hi, I was trying to create an archive for my talk page at this page, but it said that my action was disallowed and to contact an administrator. 82.3.185.12 08:05, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I didn't see this ping somehow. I see the archive page, though. It exists, so you should be able to move anything to it. Let me know if you have any more problems. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:48, 22 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: When I try to copy and paste, it says that I am using other people's signatures, marks it as vandalism, and asks me to contact an administrator. 82.3.185.12 08:56, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just saw that those edits were disallowed by a filter. I think the problem was cleared up and you should be able to archive stuff now if you try. Please try and let me know, before I open a discussion with technical people about this. Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:06, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: yep, that worked. thanks. 82.3.185.12 09:32, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm glad. Sorry I didn't notice this earlier. The pings aren't working, somehow. Ikan Kekek (talk) 10:10, 23 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: I am not an expert, but I understand that pings don't work for users who are not logged in. Enclosing the UserID in "[[ ]]" like this: User:Ikan Kekek does generate a notification though, I think? Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 22:03, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
It didn't. I'm logged in, though. Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:54, 31 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Ikan Kekek: Sorry for the confusion, I was replying to your original post in which you said you did not receive a ping from 82.3.185.12. I tried to explain that the reason you did not receive a ping was because the user was not logged in. However, it appears I may have been wrong. I just received a ping from a different IP user, who sent me a ping on another wiki. Cheers, Ottawahitech (talk) 00:31, 5 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Ottawahitech: Let's test this. I am an IP user. 82.3.185.12 10:00, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes @82.3.185.12: I got your ping, but I cannot not use the notification system to thank you, but I can (and have)use(d) it to thank ‎ @Ikan Kekek Ottawahitech (talk) 23:00, 6 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, it's impossible to thank IP users (unless you post a message to their user talk pages). Ikan Kekek (talk) 02:12, 7 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikivoyage_talk:Joke_articles

[edit]

It's wiki convention that talk pages stay in the order they were written in. When the page gets too long, older discussions get moved into an archive. I have rolled back all your recent edits to that page, though I did reinstate your idea for 2021, at the bottom of the page, where it belongs.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 16:38, 1 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Oh ok, I was thinking we could split the page into actual April Fools suggestions and all the other stuff that's on there. 82.3.185.12 09:58, 2 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Less active

[edit]

I might be a bit less active for a few months as I have recently returned to school. I will still try to edit at least once every two weeks if I can. :) 82.3.185.12 15:05, 12 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Broken leg

I broke my leg a few days ago. Expect me to be less active for a while. 82.3.185.12 12:41, 29 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why, do you type with your feet? =)
Seriously though, sorry to hear about your broken leg; I broke my arm last spring and at first it sucked, but it wasn't as bad as it seemed. Get well soon.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 15:58, 29 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
@ThunderingTyphoons!: Thank you for your kind words. I hope to return when I’m feeling better (maybe next week but I can’t make any promises!). 82.3.185.12 19:51, 29 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Creating an account

[edit]

Hi 82.3.185.12,

Why not create an account? Considering that IP's aren't permanent, as well as I've been checking all IP's to see if they aren't User:ArticCynda. Additionally, you can move pages as well as be thanked for your edits.

Also, hope your leg gets better mate :)

Cheers, SHB2000 (talk) 05:59, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SHB2000: Thank you for your nice comment! I don't want to use an account on Wikivoyage as I have been editing under an IP for four months. I do not know who that person is, but if you geolocate my IP address, you should be able to see I am based in Eastleigh, England. I think I will stop editing Wikivoyage for a while, just until my leg gets better. 82.3.185.12 11:45, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
It won’t let me put the name of the user above as it triggers the filter ‘Block evasion’. That is why I wrote “that person” instead of the user’s name. 82.3.185.12 13:17, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
I see. SHB2000 (talk) 22:20, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Time off due to broken leg

[edit]

I am planning to not edit Wikivoyage for at least a week due to my broken leg. @Ikan Kekek, Ground Zero:, do you know if there’s any way to get w:Template:Wikibreak to work here? I will not edit for a while, so I might not see talk page queries for a while. Thank you. 82.3.185.12 21:20, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

It won't work here, because we don't have the code for it. If you need something that stands out, you could use {{Cautionbox|your message}}.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 21:23, 31 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikibreak template

[edit]

Regarding the wikibreak template, I've copied the one of enwiki with a few modifications. Hope it works. Just put {{Wikibreak}} and it should work. SHB2000 (talk) 04:13, 1 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

A British barncompass for you!

[edit]
The British Wikivoyage Barncompass
For all your great work on British articles. You deserve a barncompass. Hope your leg gets better and also note, you're the first person on Wikivoyage to receive this barncompass. Take care, --SHB2000 (talk) 10:29, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SHB2000: If you click on the photo, you can see the description is "The Houses of Parliament, seen across Westminster Bridge". 82.3.185.12 15:49, 13 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SHB2000: Since I can’t edit your talk page, I’ll post it here. Do you think it would be easier, if instead of creating each new barnstar as a different template, you could just add another parameter called “Variation”, where you could just type a number/word to change the Barncompass to that variation? 82.3.185.12 14:50, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Well, I'm doing this for the greater WV community so I'd prefer to have each and induvidual barncompass. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 21:22, 20 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Kinda late, but congrats mate. I think you've got the most number of edits as an IP user in the history of Wikivoyage. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:07, 3 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Then I think I'm the most active editor here on this site. I recently did 3000 is edits in my april break and KevRobbSCO left. So I'm the most active editor on two wiki's now. (na.wikipedia as well) SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:14, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Had a local Covid case after 150 ish days in Sydney which I might be at home more = more editing here. Hi there, your opinion is requested in Talk:Jervis Bay. I've proposed a major change and if done, this is fairly significant and will disrupt a number of articles. Thanks and take care, SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:51, 5 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Last Edit Date

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

Why did the 'Last Edit Date' section inside templates change? It used to say "subst:#time:Y-m-d", but now it just has the date. Why do I have to change it every time now? 82.3.185.12 14:30, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

For me it still seems to say {{subst:#time:Y-m-d}}.
Have you tried using the listing editor instead of the visual editor for modifying listings? You can get to the listing editor by clicking the grey "edit" button at the end of the listing. I find it easier to use than the visual editor, and it gives you a box to check for whether or not to mark the listing as up-to-date. —Granger (talk · contribs) 18:10, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger, 82.3.185.12: On the most recent tech updates section (see on my talk page) it says it could be confused with Y-Y then Y-M. SHB2000 (talk) 22:55, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
That note is about the mw:citoid service, which makes Wikipedia-style little blue clicky numbers (like this: [1]). That change shouldn't affect anything else. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:17, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Mx. Granger: It does for me, but whenever I update a template, it replaces subst:#time:Y-m-d with 2021-04-11 or whatever the date is. 82.3.185.12 16:17, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I see. It seems that in the visual editor, the lastedit date is only updated automatically for logged-in users, not for users editing anonymously. I can see three solutions:
a) accept that if you want to mark the listing as up to date, you'll need to do so manually,
b) use the listing editor instead of the visual editor, or
c) create an account instead of editing anonymously.
Granger (talk · contribs) 19:47, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Mx. Granger: It used to do it automatically for me, it’s just doesn’t now. I’ll probably do option A or B, depending on how I feel. Thanks for your help. 82.3.185.12 20:04, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Mx. Granger: unfortunately 82.3.185.12 can't as whenever he does that, it triggers the filter "block evasion" SHB2000 (talk) 22:22, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000, Mx. Granger: no it doesn’t, it triggered that filter because I typed the name of a blocked user on my talk page. 82.3.185.12 07:14, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Oh I see. That's ArticCynda right? SHB2000 (talk) 07:18, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Yes. You left a message on my talk page saying you were checking all IP addresses to check if they were him. I tried to type his name in my reply to you, and that’s what triggered the filter. 82.3.185.12 07:22, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Problem with the pings?

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

Pings seem to not be working as well recently; here are a few examples: 82.3.185.12 17:58, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@82.3.185.12: What leads you to believe that? Nelson Ricardo (talk) 20:20, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
By the way, I got an alert that I can't ping you, because you're anonymous. Nelson Ricardo (talk) 20:23, 22 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Nricardo: I know people can’t ping me. 82.3.185.12 05:00, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
But seriously, why not create an account. You could be instantly an autopatrolled user as I don't usually want to patrol them, as I'm 300% sure that it's good faith (unless the IP address goes to someone else). And you could edit autoconfirmed pages. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:33, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: I do not want to use an account as I have been editing under an IP for 5 months. 82.3.185.12 06:35, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I made that mistake when editing under an IP for 9 months (on enwiki, not here). Totally regret it. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:36, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
For that reason, I don’t want to use an account and lose five months worth of edits. 82.3.185.12 06:38, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I see, our situations were different. I usually get a new IP every 5 days (where I got one 500km away from where I am), but you've had this for like ages. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:41, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @SHB2000: I see. My IP only changes when I reset my router. 82.3.185.12 06:44, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

On sv-wp we have a user who registered "User:Former x.x.x.x" (with x:s from his IP). That's a bit extreme. You could link to your IP talk page and IP contributions. I think it'd be worthwhile. If you don't have control over your IP, you'd lose it anyway sooner or later. –LPfi (talk) 07:13, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Do we have that here? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:04, 23 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: It's just a user who chose such a user name. Instead of the IP user "User:192.0.2.123" there is a logged in user "User:Former_192.0.2.123." –LPfi (talk) 15:06, 24 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Is 82.132.216.203 you? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:08, 24 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

If you create an account, on your userpage you can say what your IP address was so you can claim credit for all of the work you did in the last 5 months. That would be better than continuing anonymously, making it harder to everyone to communicate with you. Gizza (roam) 23:18, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
You could create an account that says 82 etc. similar to 162 etc. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:17, 1 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Can't edit pages with the VisualEditor anymore

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

Why can I no longer edit pages without editing source? It is really annoying because:

A) I can no longer easily edit templates without editing their source
B) The 'lastedit' section of templates doesn't change automatically, so I have to go back and change it manually.

The last time I was able to do this was on the 7th of April. Why won't it let me edit pages with the VisualEditor anymore? 82.3.185.12 11:38, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wait, I can change it from source to visual editing on my tablet. I will see if I can do that on my laptop (where I do most of my edits) when I go back on it later. 82.3.185.12 12:10, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@SHB2000, Mx. Granger, ThunderingTyphoons!: Yes, I'm on my laptop now and it is letting me make visual edits. 82.3.185.12 14:15, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's still a problem for me, although I prefer source editing except when it comes to tables (which I'm okay with). SHB2000 (talk) 22:51, 10 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
Logged-in editors might want to check Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing, specifically the "Editing mode" option. That lets you define your favorite starting point. WhatamIdoing (talk) 01:15, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
I just realised that I only noticed on talk pages and this pub, which don't need the visual editor and don't have the visual version. SHB2000 (talk) 08:58, 11 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
If you'd like a visual experience on talk pages, you might look at "Discussion tools" in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures. I like it. WhatamIdoing (talk) 21:12, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

@82.3.185.12, ThunderingTyphoons!, ShakespeareFan00:. I've been trying to get rid of all stub articles, where I stumped on this. I don't know how to improve it, as it's just a 160km path. Do you know how to since all three of you have a good knowledge about the UK? Thanks, SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 06:43, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I have been to the Cotswolds, but haven't walked the path. Some articles are better left as stubs or outlines until someone with direct experience takes on the challenge. You could also ask the article's creator, user:Sgdwn, who is still active on other wikis, how they would improve it --ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 08:11, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'm just trying to bump all stubs to outlines. Done 5, 4 more to go. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:20, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Okay, so I've bumped it to outline, made a pagebanner and adding coords to it, but apart from it, I'm not sure what else I can do to improve it SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:35, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: I don't really know much about it, but I did fix a few things on the article. 82.3.185.12 18:20, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks! SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 21:25, 14 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the article status templates

[edit]

Hi there, hope your doin' well, I just wanted to say thanks for those templates that you've made. It makes my userpage a lot better. Fun fact: I've done about 140 ish edits to only my userpage. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:57, 20 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Test

[edit]

{{User:82.3.185.12/Stub|delete|test}}

@82, when you put this template, it doesn't come up in the speedy deletion category. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:05, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Do you know how to get it to add it to that category? 82.3.185.12 13:10, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Include the following code below after the template:

<includeonly>{{#ifeq:{{FULLPAGENAME}}|Wikivoyage:Template index||{{#if:{{{example|}}}||[[Category:Speedy deletion candidates]]}}}}</includeonly>

Let me know. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:14, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: I have added the code and purged the page, but this page still does not appear. Is it because it is a talk page? 82.3.185.12 13:16, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: I think it is because it works on the Graffiti wall. 82.3.185.12 13:17, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Template:Delete when I added it on User talk:Vegetables nauseous' talk page. But try it on User_talk:SHB2000/nonsende (deliberate spelling error). SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:23, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Yes it does work on talk pages, including my own. 82.3.185.12 13:26, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I'll leave it as it is, and an admin can delete it if they want. Cheers, SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 13:27, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Okay. 82.3.185.12 14:19, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Please create an account

[edit]

Please. I know you like your IP address, but considering your very good contribution history, please use your SUL (single-user login) account on Wikivoyage as well. All you need to do is list your IP address on your userpage. You could even consider asking whether it is possible to convert all edits with your IP to your SUL account (I don't think it would be possible, but could explore it for you). This can also help with getting unblocked on en.wikipedia.

Your not using an account is directly affecting Wikivoyage as you cannot contribute as much as you can and can't even move pages. You should already be a sysop (admin) by now and your use of an IP is unnecessarily hampering not only your capabilities, but your follow contributors as well. I for one would be happy to consider you for sysop in as little as a couple of months once you use your account. Leaderboard (talk) 17:20, 2 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I can't tell you the number of times how much I've wanted you to have patroller rights. I'm not too sure about sysop, as most sysops here are from at least 2018. And also, I very much agree with Leaderboard's quote
As far as I want, I've never really wanted to have an IP talk page. Not only is it sort of defeating the purpose of having my talk page protected, it's only a matter of time before Ljupco/Lupco finds out about it.
And yes, if you did create an account, I'd also nominate you for sysop, just before Christmas, possibly along with myself. I do think you'll be a worthy admin, and I think you'd be a good person to take all the responsibilities. After all, I've managed two WMF projects on my own (applying for admin on the second one soon), and if I were an IP user, I don't think I'd be able to.
Furthermore, sometimes, your good faith edits also triggers the abuse filter, making it much easier, if you just had an account. As these filters were used against bad-faith users, it often does not have your IP as an exception.
Hope this helps mate, and have a good day! Cheers, SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 07:57, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: I don't think that you can move edits from one account to another. You mentioned above that

however I think that the reverse will be true as if they look at CentralAuth, they will only see contributions from when I started using the account. 82.3.185.12 15:50, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

That's true, but you can just link your IP account from your SUL account and people will understand. And Wikipedia likes to see contributions from other projects - a significant reason why my unblock request was accepted in the end was because I had contributed a lot to Wikibooks by then. Leaderboard (talk) 16:16, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: I have already mentioned my edits on Wikivoyage, and I don't think that they would check my WV userpage. 82.3.185.12 16:17, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
It would be more convincing if you edited using your SUL account. Plus, there is a dangerous consequence of not using the account - it could be the case that you accidentally edit using another IP which can be caught as sockpuppetry. You know what would happen then (it would be treated as block evasion).
Even if you didn't have a Wikipedia block, the fact is that not only can you not contribute the way others can, you're also creating extra work for others. Leaderboard (talk) 16:23, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: However if I started editing with an account now, if Wikipedia check CentralAuth, they will only see contributions starting from now. Even if I did post a message on my userpage, they would be unlikely to check it and see it. 82.3.185.12 16:27, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
"Wikipedia check CentralAuth, they will only see contributions starting from now" - earlier is better than later.
"Even if I did post a message on my userpage, they would be unlikely to check it and see it." - I don't think that would be the case - at least I wouldn't. You could even get a couple of established users support your case if you want. Leaderboard (talk) 16:31, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: How would I get established users to support me? 82.3.185.12 16:34, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
You could ping myself, SHB2000 or any Wikivoyage admin on your Wikipedia SUL talk page, and they can write a statement of support (something that lets an admin know that your claim on the IP address is true). Leaderboard (talk) 16:35, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: In that case, wouldn't it be easier if I kept using my IP address here as it might make the claim less believable if I suddenly switch. 82.3.185.12 16:37, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
No, because others (en.wikivoyage) users will know that your IP address and SUL account are from the same user. Stewards (or a local CheckUser which this project does not have) can also verify your claim (this is allowed in theory by meta:CU). Leaderboard (talk) 16:39, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: Would an established user have to be an admin? I'm assuming that would be the case. 82.3.185.12 16:46, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Not necessarily, while being an admin would help, I would personally be OK with a sufficiently trusted user like SHB2000. Leaderboard (talk) 16:47, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
With your permission, I can file a phabricator task to see if "transferring" your IP edits to your SUL account would be possible. No guarantees though. Leaderboard (talk) 16:46, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: How long do you think that would take? 82.3.185.12 16:48, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I can file the task now, can't give a timeframe as that would depend on the sysadmins and related discussion. Leaderboard (talk) 16:49, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
I have created the phabricator task, can link you to it but beware that it will reveal your SUL account to anyone watching this page (since I had to explain your situation). As I've been asked not to reveal your SUL account on this site, please confirm that you're OK with this - anyone seeing this page can then connect your IP to your SUL. Leaderboard (talk) 17:42, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: I can see the phabricator task that you set. 82.3.185.12 17:47, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @Leaderboard: It depends how long it would take for Wikipedia to review my unblock appeal. I think it would be easier to ask an admin to leave a message on my Wikipedia talkpage. 82.3.185.12 16:55, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Leaderboard: You can file a phabricator task if you want, but I don't know how long it will take for Wikipedia to review my unblock appeal. 82.3.185.12 16:56, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: I don't know who would leave a statement of support on my Wikipedia talk page, please could you do it? 82.3.185.12 17:03, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Done from my end. Leaderboard (talk) 17:31, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Your unblock request on en.wikipedia has nothing to do with this case. Leaderboard (talk) 17:28, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Leaderboard: As you mentioned above

I think Wikipedia are more likely to believe someone who left a statement of support if I continued to use this IP address. 82.3.185.12 17:32, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

And why would that be? I have clearly explained your situation on the en.wiki talk page of your SUL account. Leaderboard (talk) 17:33, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: When I wrote that message, I didn't realise that you had written that. 82.3.185.12 17:39, 3 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikivoyage:Welcome message#Anonymous users states “But make it clear that it's [creating an account] in no way required.” So while I’d encourage you to create an account, it’s up to you. @SHB2000, ThunderingTyphoons!, Leaderboard, Ikan Kekek, Ground Zero, AlasdairW, Crouch, Swale, Mx. Granger, LPfi, Nelson Ricardo 2500, Ypsilon, WhatamIdoing: I have decided to retire from Wikivoyage. I have enjoyed editing and collaborating with you over the past few months so I just wanted to say thank you for all of the help and support that you have given me and wish you all the best for the future. 82.3.185.12 20:56, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for your great contributions here! Good luck on whatever path the future has in store for you. Nelson Ricardo (talk) 21:07, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Don't feel bound by this decision. Come back anytime! Ikan Kekek (talk) 22:38, 6 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Good luck mate! I have to say, the Hampshire region is looking a lot better now, after your contributions. Come back anytime, if you want, and I can tell you, if you do come back, the Eastleigh Starnom will still be going. And I'll tell you, (haven't told anyone this) but having discussions with you has lifted my day at times, and at times when I've just had a tiring, intense day, just having a discussion helped me a lot. Good luck on your future path that takes you, and finally, I'm glad to hear that your leg is better. Take care, and as always, you have made a key difference in the history of Wikivoyage. Cheers, SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 08:35, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for everything! Maybe I'll see you on Wikipedia some day. And as others have said, the door's always open if you decide to come back in the future.--ThunderingTyphoons! (talk) 08:39, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the time and hope you get back, whenever that suits your situation. –LPfi (talk) 11:39, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thankyou to but we'd welcome you back at anytime. Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:36, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
Thank you, and I hope you decide to come back some time. Ground Zero (talk) 15:47, 8 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Global "ntsamr"-pattern spambot filter

[edit]
Swept in from the pub

I kept accidentally triggering the filter earlier, and it kept disallowing my edits. Is there any way to avoid being caught by this filter? Thanks, 82.3.185.12 17:56, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

I cannot ping an IP address, but the answer would simply exclude this IP address. I cannot do this; a GS, AFM or a local sysop will need to do this change for you. Leaderboard (talk) 18:52, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I cannot see the filter, so more than admin rights is needed. The edits seemed innocent – nothing I'd imagine would trigger false positives, at least not in all of them – does the filter act on something that was on the talk page from before? That is usually a less good idea. –LPfi (talk) 20:38, 17 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@LPfi: Ah I can because I have meta:AFH. In that case you'll usually need a Meta sysop to fix this - I've asked them to fix it. But IP address, I strongly urge you to create an account, as it's difficult to work around this issue all the time, since a lot of abuse comes from IP addresses. Leaderboard (talk) 07:51, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
I agree that it'd be nice if 82.3.185.12 registered, but on the other hand it is good that false positives hit an established user, who complains instead of just giving up. Otherwise we might never know. I'd like to be able to edit classified as less privileged to see what I would be caught by, thus being able to review some deficiencies of the filters – but without tweaks in the software it is more trouble than it's worth for me. –LPfi (talk) 08:32, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
comment I don't think that it is necessary to edit the global abuse filter for this false positive. It happens. That said when I see the edit "I have moved your old userpage to this one, feel free to revert. ~~~~" by an IP address, I would be wanting that to be triggering filters IMO. Billinghurst (talk) 08:36, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
You are right, but I think its rather the action of moving a user page (or, as in this case, redirecting it) that should be privileged, not telling about it. –LPfi (talk) 08:49, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Or, start a fresh account on Wikivoyage. But leaderboard, what did you do to get a 4 year ban? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 09:56, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: See my en.wiki talk page. Basically, I put up a hobby project of mine as my userpage, not knowing that this was considered spamming, and got blocked as a username violation. My appeals to convince the admins that I had no bad intention did not work (the easy alternative was to request a username change, which I was not willing to). It took 4.5 years for my case to be brought up at WP:AN and the unblock request granted. Leaderboard (talk) 10:14, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Gee, and to say, this is a good example of why I don't edit enwiki frequently. And how is Leaderboard a username violation? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:17, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000: Because the page I linked to was to a website of that name (that is, it was a personal website I owned that showcased that project of mine, namely a hobby web browser). After all, I was not even a teenager then... Leaderboard (talk) 10:30, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's not good, seriously, they should have some sort of consideration. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:49, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
But I do remember when I was 9, I changed spelling from US spelling to British Spelling on enwiki. Didn't get blocked for that but I felt blasted, even though it was a Lev 2 template. After that, I hadn't made edits in years. Until last year, where I edited under an IP address. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 10:53, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Leaderboard: - but if one is blocked on any wiki, is there any restriction on preventing them from becoming an admin on another wiki? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 11:39, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
It is up to the local wiki whom to trust, and being blocked elsewhere can weight in or be ignored, at the discretion of those voting on the nomination. –LPfi (talk) 11:44, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Although I do know a user who is blocked in a wiki and is a sysop in another, who I will not name, it does certainly look unusual when you go to Special:CentralAuth, it starts to do the opposite of belittling my mind. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 12:00, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's not unusual for someone who is already a sysop in one place to get blocked in another later. Sometimes these blocks are unimportant. I have seen editors blocked for things like have 21 letters in their username, when the local username policy says a maximum of 20, or for having a '3' in their username where the normal spelling of the English word would use the letter 'e' (like User:3gg instead of User:Egg). WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:06, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
The username issue is funny of sorts. A name can be innocent in one language and offending in another, and policy forbids names including a company name in some wikis and recommends them in others, for COI editors. And then you might get blocked for sockpuppetry when you use the other by mistake. But blocks are also serious, as they lower the threshold for a global block. –LPfi (talk) 15:12, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
At the moment, I believe that Arabic Wikipedia has the strictest username policy. The rule that feels most surprising is that you're not allowed to use any location in your username. If you think about the geopolitical POV pushing they have to deal with, I don't begrudge them their restrictions. WhatamIdoing (talk) 17:41, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
Nah, doesn't seem like a good reason, but whatever. Ikan Kekek (talk) 21:21, 18 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── @WhatamIdoing: So if I edited there with my old username, then that'll mean I'd get blocked? SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 09:27, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Theoretically, they could, but I suspect that they are much more concerned with references to locations with religious or political significance in the Middle East. WhatamIdoing (talk) 15:05, 19 May 2021 (UTC)Reply
@WhatamIdoing:, also, the user that I mentioned earlier (who I shall not name) was blocked for contributing in languages that they don't know on the incubator. SHB2000 (talk | contribs | en.wikipedia) 04:24, 10 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Such an IP address can be shared by several users.
