Lanark was originally a place name of Scottish origin, likely from the Cumbric "Lanerc" meaning "clear space, glade". It appears in multiple communities:

  • Lanark - The old county town of Lanarkshire, in the Central Belt.
  • New Lanark - Mill village near Lanark, site of Social Utopian work by Robert Owen, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
