Jump to navigation Jump to search

Gîte is a French word for a type of travel accommodation. The meaning varies with the dialect of French:

  • In France, it generally means a furnished cottage with a kitchen, and the whole place is usually rented by the week for a family or other group travelling together. Gîtes ruraux are holiday cottages, gîtes d'étape are very basic overnight accommodations for hikers. See B&Bs and Gîtes in the France article.
  • In Quebec, a cottage is a chalet; a gîte du passant or gîte et déjeuner is a bed and breakfast which rents individual rooms overnight. See Québec#Sleep.
