Surt (also Sirt, Sirte) is a city in Libya, best known as Muammar Gaddhafi's hometown. Prior to the civil war of 2011 it was bestowed with a number of governmental edifices subsequently destroyed by NATO aerial bombardment, relentless shelling by NTC rebel forces and then subjected to vandalism and looting of the remains following the killing of Muammar Gaddhafi and the suspension of combative activities on 21 October 2011.
