Appearance
Understand
Yeongwol is famous for a legend of King Danjong (1441-1457), who was dethroned by his uncle King Sejo and assassinated in this region. His dead body was thrown to riverside, but a loyal servant buried the body secretly. After a few hundred years, his tomb was found and it renamed Jangneung. Yeongwol people has felt sympathy for the young king, and held a festival to commemorate him. Some shamans believe the king became a god to protect Yeongwol.

The Taebaek line goes through Yeongwol, stopping at Ssangryong Station and Yeongwol Station.

Royal Tombs
- 1 Jangneung (장릉), 190, Danjong-ro, Yeongwol-eup, Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon-do, ☏ +82 33 374-4215. 09:00-19:00 (May-Oct), 09:00-18:00 (Nov-Feb). Even though most of the royal tombs of Joseon Dynasty are in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, Jangneung for King Danjong is in Yeongwol, because the young king was murdered here. Yeongwol registants hold an annual festival, Yeongwol Danjong Festival to commemorate him. Adult ₩2,000 / Teenage ₩1,500 / Child ₩1,000.
