Toccoa is in the Northeast High Country of Georgia.
Understand
[edit]Toccoa means beautiful in the Cherokee language, although the town is a bit provincial. In 1938 during Great Depression times, Franklin Delano Roosevelt made a speech here from the back of his presidential train car, and Oral Roberts did his Pentecostal preaching here too. One dark moment for Toccoa occurred in 1977 when a flood broke the upstream Kelly Barnes Dam and killed 39 people. But one of the highlights to visiting Toccoa, aside from the surrounding natural scenery, is the Currahee Military Museum which commemorates Camp Toccoa and the WWII paratrooper training that went on here for the Army's 101st Airborne Division, the unit depicted in the TV series Band of Brothers.
