Old Market of Uri

Uri is a town in the Baramula District of Jammu and Kashmir in India. The river Jhelum flows through Uri. The town is very close to the LOC (Line of Control), the disputed border between India and Pakistan.

By road, Uri is connected to Baramula and Gulmarg. Taxis (sumos) are available from Baramula. The route is absolutely stunning, with green valleys and tall mountains. Many rice fields and small villages are visible en route.

There is no rail service to Uri. The nearest railway station is in Jammu.

The nearest airport is in Srinagar.

Tourism is not popular in Uri. The local people are friendly and welcoming. There are cops moving around as Uri is only 3 km from Pakistan and it is an active area with militancy.

There are a number of places in Uri that are worth visiting:

1)Ancient Pandav Mandir: It’s the ancient Hindu temple in the village of Lagama. It contains beautiful statues of the Pandavas and a beautiful murti of Radha Krishna. According to Hindu belief, when the Pandavas came there and threw a powerful bow near the temple, a pure spring emerged. The water of that spring is considered by locals to be blessed and healthful.

2)BaBa Fareed: It’s a religious place of great saint (Baba Fareed) Which is located at the top of mountain from where you can see beautiful view of Kashmir valley. Also there’s a foot print of baba fareed’s unicorn horse notched over a stone. Contact the local people of uri they’re very cooperative to show you the exact path.

3) Chham (waterfall) : located inside the village Nambla which is located near by Uri town.

4) Jhelum river: you can enjoy the scenic beauty of river by sitting nearby.

5) Uri power project : It’s an underground city where electricity has been generated with the help of river Jhelum. It’s spread over few kilometres inside ground. In order to visit here you need permission from Army.

There are very few hotels in Uri. You may find one nearby.

Stay safe

Uri has mostly temperatures below zero, so wear protective clothes to prevent frostbite. Also, don't go out alone at night. There are drunk people and snatchers in the streets at night.

Also, don't go very far. Remember that militant activity is extremely high here.
