Europe > Central Europe > Germany > Saxony-Anhalt > Zeitz

Zeitz is a town in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.

Understand

[edit]

Zeitz is often used in the media as an example of dreariness and hopelessness in the east, whereby as so often only the negative sides are shown - completely dilapidated and run-down Gründerzeit quarters as well as an empty pedestrian zone are well suited for the camera, while the worthwhile sights are ignored to make the city seem drabber than it really is. One should not be deterred by a visit to the city simply because of the picture presented by Zeitz in the media.

Get in

[edit]

By plane

[edit]

From the Leipzig Halle Airport (LEJ IATA) via the A9 southbound and continue via the B91 (about 40 km).

By train

[edit]

The most important railway line, the Elstertalbahn, runs from Leipzig via Zeitz to Gera. A branch line with Burgenlandbahn railcars connects Zeitz and Weißenfels. The 1 Bahnhof Zeitz (railway station) lies north of the city centre on the opposite bank of the Weisse Elster. It's about 40 minutes by train from Leipzig.

By bus

[edit]

Flixbus drives to Zeitz twice a day on the Gera—Berlin route. The long-distance bus stop is at the station forecourt.

The Zeitz-Naumburg route is served by bus.

By car

[edit]

Several federal highways intersect in Zeitz: the Leipzig—Gera highway, the Naumburg—Altenburg highway, and the federal highway Halle—Zeitz highway. Zeitz has a connection to the Berlin—Munich autobahn via the B 180 to the west and via the B 91 to the north-west. Heading south in the direction of Gera via the B 2, you reach the Dresden—Erfurt autobahn.
