Mojácar is an elevated mountain village and a tourist resort in Almería. It is 90 km from the capital of the province, Almería.

Mojácar has been inhabited by many different groups since antiquity. Populated since the Bronze Age around 2000 BC, traders such as the Phoenicians and Carthaginians arrived to serve the growing communities. Under Greek dominion, the settlement was called Murgis-Akra, whence came the Latinized Moxacar, the arab Muxacra, and finally the current name of Mojácar.

Climate

Mojácar has more than 3000 hours of sun per year. Rainfall is seldom and weak, with an average rainfall of 200mm per year. The average yearly temperature is around 20 °C. Winter is normally mild. Mojácar is classified as being in the 11 climate zone (the highest climate zone) that means the temperature in Mojácar is never lower than 4 °C.

The average temperature in winter varies between 10 °C and 18 °C. The average temperature in summer varies between 26 °C and 32 °C.

By bus

  • Almería — Alsa runs buses run from Almería about three times a day; a single ticket costs €8.20. Buses arrive and depart in front of Parque Comercial, sharing the bus stop with city buses.

Get around

There are bus services between the village of Mojácar and the beaches, and also between Mojácar and places around, including Garrucha. Line 1 is a regular city bus calling at all stops (although some on request only), other lines run intercity coaches (operated by Autocares Baraza) and only stop at key stops in Mojácar.

  • Line 1 runs on a circular route from the southern end of Mojácar Playa (hotel Puerto Marina) towards the shopping centre in central part, then up to the village and back to the shopping centre, and then to the final leg to the north of the beach area, Avenida del Palacio.
  • Line 2 runs from the southern end of Mojácar Playa to Garrucha and onwards to Vera.
  • Line 3 runs from Vera through Garrucha, Mojácar and Mojácar Playa onwards to Carboneras and Playa de los Muertos.
