Alatskivi Castle
  • 1 Alatskivi Castle (Estonian: Alatskivi loss), Alatskivi (near the Zwiebelberg). A Neo-Gothic castle dating to the 17th century. It was rebuilt in the late 19th century modelled on the royal residence of Balmoral in Scotland. Five rooms on the first floor house the Eduard Tubin museum, which documents his accomplishments as a music composer and conductor. The castle is surrounded by various ancillary buildings and a forested park of 130 hectares. The park contains many oaks, ashes, maples, alders and an approach road lined with linden trees. It is built on the high bank of Lake Alatskivi at the foot of the Alatskivi valley. An arched entrance leads to the castle along a road lined with linden trees. • 2 Zwiebelberg (between Kolkja and Varnja. With the Tartu-Alatskivi bus from Tartu stop at Kasepaa (in the middle) 45 min, €2.50.). It is German for "onion hill", although the region can barely be described as hilly. All they seem to do here is growing onions and selling them. Enjoy the weird scenery, and maybe buy some for a healthy meal. It leaves you wondering, why no one is selling a delicious onion soup, dish or cake.
House of prayer of the Old Believers
  • 3 House of prayer of the Old Believers (Kallaste vanausuliste palvemaja), Kiriku street 14. The Kallaste Old Believers prayer house was built in 1865. In 1903, the prayer house was overhauled, in 1913 a bell tower was built next to the prayer house. The Kallaste Old Believer prayer house is the oldest Old Believer prayer house in Estonia.
