Europe > Italy > Central Italy > Marche > Ancona (province) > Senigallia

Senigallia is in the Ancona region of Marche, Italy.

Understand

[edit]

A fishing port town of 45,000 people (2017) in the Marche region, it has a well preserved castle called La Rocca.

Senigallia is also known for the beach. The sand is very special being uncommonly soft. For this reason, Senigallia is also known as "Spiaggia di Velluto" ("Velvet beach"). On the beach you can also have a drink and enjoy music at the "La Rotonda".

"Take a stroll like an Italian"- at around sunset (when it is cooler) just after, or right before dinner, every Italian heads to "Il Corso" a main street in the town to say hi to all their neighbors, catch up on gossip, and meet friends.

Get in

[edit]

Senigallia is well connected by car, since the Adriatica highway has an exit for the town.

Many trains stop at the city train station, though to catch most of the Intercity (and higher) trains serving the Adriatica train line, you will need to catch a local train and take a connection in Ancona, Pesaro, or Rimini.

Get around

[edit]

The universal way of getting around in Senigallia is by bike. You will find people of all ages using bikes to move around the small town.

Car traffic has increased, though, and sometimes even in this bike heaven you begin to feel the need for protected bike lanes. Actually, there is practically only one bike lane, which runs along the whole "Lungomare".

Moving by car, though sometimes unavoidable, can be sometimes difficult, especially in summer, when the city is full of tourists. Parking in particular can be a difficult task.

The centre of the town is mostly closed to non-resident car traffic.

There are a few bus lines, but the service is not very frequent.
