Zunil is a small, mostly agricultural village in Guatemala.

Get in

[edit]

There are many local buses from Quetzaltenango going toward Zunil. You can catch the ride from either the Minerva bus terminal or Rotonda bus terminal. Many Spanish language schools for example organize a trip also.

Get around

[edit]

See

[edit]

It is well known in the area for its beautiful Catholic Church.

Market Day: Monday

  • San Simón (Maximón). San Simón is a local deity worshipped in Zunil, in a mixture of Maya and Roman Catholic religion. The image of the deity is a mannequin that the local cofradía (brotherhood) tend, burning candles, offering cigarettes and liquor, and carrying our rituals. The custodians charge for entry, with extra to take photos. The mannequín is regularly moved between houses of members of the cofradía, so you will have to ask around to find where it is being housed. Be respectful. The locals take his worship very seriously and have been known to be violent towards tourists who mock them, or their deity.

Do

[edit]
Fuentes Georginas hot springs
  • 1 Fuentes Georginas. Hot volcanic spring baths, up in the mountains a couple of miles south of the village. Arrange transport from Zunil. Restaurant serves decent food. Overnight cabins available for hire.
  • Pico Zunil. Pico Zunil is a mountain peak to the southeast of Zunil. A steep trail heads up the mountain through bamboo forest from behind the Fuentes Georginas volcanic baths. From the peak there are fine views across the valleys to the volcanoes around Lake Atitlán.
