Mountain Gorillas in Bwindi's impenetrable forest

Butogota is a town located in Kanungu district, western Uganda. It is located approximately 450km from Kampala, the capital.

Understand

[edit]

The town is mainly a trade centre for the neighbouring communities.

However it has become increasingly popular as the gateway of choice for travellers heading to the world heritage site Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to half the world's population of mountain gorillas.

Get in

[edit]

The easiest way to get in is by boarding a public bus from Kampala; a number of providers exist but Muhabura and Savanah bus services will get you there direct. Travel times range from 8 to 10 hours depending on a variety of factors

Get around

[edit]

While in Butogota, popular boda boda riders are at service for short distances. For long tours, especially to Bwindi Impenetrable, one will have to charter private vehicles from the town as the road is quite rough.
