Get in

[edit]

By car

[edit]

Kilcunda is located on the Bass Highway (B460). If coming from Melbourne, the South Gippsland Highway (M420) forks off from the Princes Highway (M1) at Dandenong. Follow the South Gippsland Highway until Lang Lang, after which the road forks into the South Gippsland Highway (A440) and the Bass Highway (M420). Follow the Bass Highway to reach Kilcunda.

By public transport

[edit]

V/Line offers coach services from Dandenong train station to Kilcunda, which operate 4 times a day on weekdays and 2 times on Saturdays. The full timetable can be found here.

Map of Kilcunda

If you're staying in Kilcunda, then most everything listed here should be in walking distance. However, travelling to nearby towns will require a car.

See

[edit]
  • 1 Kilcunda Beach. This is the main beach in Kilcunda, accessible from the main road and the caravan park, and it contains shallow rock pools and a wide stretch of sand. Exercise caution while swimming here given the rocky environment.
  • 2 Kilcunda Surf Beach. As the name suggests, this beach is popular with surfers, and contains expansive sand dunes. The surf beach is also a good spot for fishing. Car parking is available.
  • 3 Kilcunda Trestle Bridge. This heritage-listed bridge was constructed in 1911 as part of the now-closed Wonthaggi railway line, to cross Bourne Creek. Nowadays, it's part of the Bass Coast Rail Trail, and with a prime beachside location, it's worth checking out.
  • 4 Shelley Beach. Somewhat separated from the town's other beaches, Shelley Beach is accessible via an access road from the Bass Highway. Rock fishing is an option here, and Black Head on the west side of Shelley Beach has a good surf break.

Do

[edit]
  • 1 George Bass Coastal Walk. This 7 km (4.3 mi) walking path is named for British explorer George Bass, and goes from Kilcunda to San Remo. The track takes about 2 hours to complete one way, and contains stunning views of the coastline. The walk involves using stiles to cross farm fences, so a reasonable level of walking competence is required.
