Balochi (بلۏچی) is the main language of the Baloch people of Balochistan, a region ranging across the borders of Pakistan, Iran and southern Afghanistan. It's also spoken by the Baloch diaspora around the world. In total there were 7.6 million Balochi speakers as of 2007. It belongs to the western Iranian language group and is thus related to Persian (Farsi) and Kurdish moments

Pronunciation guide

[edit]

Vowels

[edit]

The Balochi vowel system has at least eight vowels: five long vowels and three short vowels. The long vowels are /aː/, /eː/, /iː/, /oː/, and /uː/. The short vowels are /a/, /i/ and /u/. The short vowels have more centralized phonetic qualities than the long vowels.

Southern Balochi (at least as spoken in Karachi) also has nasalized vowels, most importantly /ẽː/ and /ãː/
