Sós-Lake

In Hungarian “sós” means salty. The name of the lake comes from its alkaline nature. Although the lake has an unsteady regimen, it is the only alkaline lake in Felső-Bácska that has a rich wildlife. You can see not only buffaloes there, but the common stilt as well. Common stilts are categorized as a protected specie, as they are endangered. When the summer starts, you can easily get mesmerized by the several wooly foxgloves that grows along the lake, in the pedunculate oak forest. From 2019 on the visitors can learn about the history of the lake and the importance of the buffaloes in the lake’s ecosystem while they are walking they are walking on an interactive educational trail.

  • Kígyós-tó: In free translation the lake is called lake with snakes. There are several kind of fishes that lives in the 14 ha big pond, so it is and ideal place for fishing. Fisherman can catch there carp, amur, pike, catfish, bream, crucian carp and pumpkinseed sunfish. The lakeshore is covered with reed and typha. Nature lovers can get lost in the beautiful environment and admire the rich wildlife while taking photos of the rare birds, reptiles and turtles. From 2021 on a theme park will be waiting for the tourists. The purpose of the park will be to raise the awareness for the environmentally friendly lifestyle.
  • Festival of Folks and Cuisines: Hungary used to be a big country with several different ethnicities. As a result of its multi-ethnic history, there are a lot of twin town relationship. The purpose of this event is to take care not only about the relationship between the towns but the traditions of the different ethnicities living in Bácska as well. The visitors can get familiar with the Polish, German, Slovak, Transylvanian, Serbian and Croatian culture and cuisine.

The “Omas” living in Bácsalmás have amazing cooking skills. In case you wonder, what “oma” means, it is a German word for grandmother. The word was spread by the Swabians living in Hungary. The grandmothers in Bácsalmás have a fantastic, yet simple receipt. They mix quark and eggs together, then they bake the mixture, lastly they serve it with either lettuce or with fruit jam. Where does the name of the dish comes from? Its surface becomes nubbly because of the quark and, it resembles to trolls.
