Appearance
South Australia is particularly known for its churches, in particular, Adelaide which is colloquially called The city of churches. Although a minority of Australia identify as Christian (43.9% in 2021), many non-Christians choose to visit the many churches and cathedrals in Adelaide for their architecture.
In Adelaide
[edit]- 1 St Peter's Cathedral, 27 King William Road, Adelaide. Perhaps the most significant religious site in Adelaide, St Peter's is South Australia's Anglican cathedral and the seat of the Archbishop of Adelaide, and the Metropolitan Bishop of the Province of South Australia. The cathedral also has a long reputation for its music as well.
- 2 St Francis Xavier's Cathedral. South Australia's Roman Catholic Cathedral, built in a Gothic Revival architectural style.
- 3 Scots Church.
- 4 Holy Trinity Church, 88 North Terrace, Adelaide.
Outside Adelaide
[edit]- 5 Serbian Orthodox Church, Coober Pedy (Church of Saint Elijah the Prophet, Црква Светог Илије Пророка / Crkva Svetog Ilije Proroka), Potch Gully Rd, Coober Pedy. Dedicated to Saint Elijah, this 1993 built church was built by Serbian Australians who settled in Coober Pedy as opal miners. Due to the extremely hot climate in Coober Pedy, they ended up building a church under the ground making a popular tourist attraction for anyone coming into Coober Pedy because of its underground location.
