Na face norte do grande terreiro da baixa de Estremoz - Rossio Marquês de Pombal - e embebido no casario, ergue-se o edifício designado por Convento das Maltesas ou de S. João da Penitência. Classificado como Monumento Nacional, - em particular o Claustro da Misericórdia - é neste local que está instalado o Centro Ciência Viva de Estremoz. Trata-se de um edifício quinhentista de estilo gótico-manuelino, no qual foram aplicados na sua construção predominantemente os materiais regionais, com o destaque para o mármore de Estremoz, alvenaria e azulejaria.
