Summary

Description

The sarcophagus for the Old Testament Prophet Daniel is 18 meters (59 feet) long because, legend has it, his body grows half an inch per year. His remains, which date to at least the 5th Century BCE, were brought here from Susa, Iran, by Tamerlane (Timur the Lame; 1336-1405) for better luck in his attempts to conquer Syria in 1400. (Or maybe the remains were brought from Syria following its conquest. Or perhaps just Daniel’s arm was brought from Mecca. Legends vary.) The current mausoleum was built in 1900.
