« Shiva Nataraja, grotte n°1. La sculpture représente Shiva effectuant la danse cosmique (Tandava). En bas, à gauche, et à droite, Parvati est également représentée. On peut aussi reconnaître autour de Shiva, Ganesh, Indra sur sa monture (éléphant) et Vishnou sur Garuda.

Les Grottes d'Elephanta sont situées en Inde occidentale, sur l'île d'Elephanta (appelée aussi île de Gharapuri), qui est constituée de deux monticules séparés par une vallée étroite. La petite île est parsemée de nombreux vestiges archéologiques qui sont les seuls témoignages de son riche passé culturel. Ces vestiges archéologiques révèlent des traces d'occupation humaine dès le IIe siècle av J.-C. Les Grottes rupestres d'Elephanta ont été aménagées entre le milieu du Ve et le VIe siècle après J.-C. extrait du site sur le patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO
