Founded on August 15, 1853, Jaú sits in the geographic center of Central São Paulo state. It is known as the "Capital of Women's Footwear" and as the "Capital of Terra Roxa".

Jaú was built on the banks of the stream of the same name, where a large fish was found, which the Indians called Ya-hu, gluttonous fish. It was founded in 1853.

In 1900, with the expansion of the coffee culture to the interior of São Paulo, the city developed, becoming the largest producer in the state. The Nossa Senhora do Patrocínio Mother Church (Cathedral), mansions, commercial houses, markets, schools, banks, clubs and squares were built at that time, and immigrants arrived, mostly Italians, Spaniards and Syrian-Lebanese, to work in the rich coffee farms, trade and services.
