Mersey River at Latrobe

Latrobe is a township of 4,200 people (2016) on the North West Coast of Tasmania.

Latrobe is a small, laid-back town located on the Mersey River. It has many small and very nice cafes and boutique shops, as well as a nice river-side parade and a caravan park.

Get in

Latrobe is roughly a 10-minute drive from Devonport, and a 70-minute drive from Launceston.

Get around

Latrobe has access to bus services via Mersey Link, who come through locally, as well as through Metro Tasmania and Redline Coaches, who have runs from Devonport out into the rest of the state. Travelling by car is the fastest and easiest option in Tasmania, though.

Latrobe is well known for its beautiful old buildings along the towns main street, Gilbert Street. There are many interesting places to visit including: Bells Parade, The Axemans Hall Of Fame, Reliquaire, and Anvers Chocolate Factory to name a few.

  • 1 Latrobe Court House Museum, 113 - 115 Gilbert Street. Aug - May: Tu-F 1-4PM. local history display operated by the National Trust. Gold coin donation.
  • 2 Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame, Bell's Parade. Daily 9AM-5PM. Museum of the sport of wood chopping. The building is made from a variety of local woods. Craft market on Sundays.
