Lisdoonvarna is in County Clare in the Ireland's Shannon Region.

Understand

Lisdoonvarna is most famous for its Matchmaker Festival which in past times was celebrated mainly to find a husband / wife. Today it still takes place in September although the motivation for going there might have changed. The town is also an excellent starting place for visiting the Burren or the Cliffs of Moher.

Get in

By car

  • From Galway: Take the N6 to Junction 9, then take the N18 south. At Kilcolgan turn on to the N67 which passes through Lisdoonvarna.
  • Alternatively you can take the coast road from Ballyvaghan to Black Head and Fanore and then back to Lisdoonvarna, which is much longer, but on a clear day you have a marvelous view over Galway Bay.
  • From Ennis: take the N67 to the north which leads you straight to Lisdoonvarna.
