Reforma Agraria is an ejido (indigenous community) in Chiapas in southern Mexico close to the border of Guatemala and the Lacandon Jungle. The ejido hosts an eco-lodge that protects the endangered ara macaw.

Get in[edit]

From Comitán, take a collecivo from the city centre. They leave from at the same bus station as the ones for the Lagunas de Montebello National Park. Tell the driver you're going to Las Guacamayas M$225 (Dec 2023) from the bus stop it's a one-kilometer walk into town.

Get around[edit]

The town is really small and easy to walk around. The only real attraction is the eco lodge of Las Guacamayas, loacated by the river.

Scarlet Macaw
  • Birds including the endangered scarlet macaw are visible around town and by the river. To get a closer look the macaws you can see them at the ecolodge where they are rescued before being reintroduced in the jungle.

Lacantún River

All of the activities are organized by the eco lodge of las Guacamayas. Prices may seem high but you can share with other people so don't hesitate to ask the guests around. Tours are only in Spanish. Some of most popular tours offered are:

  • Boat tour is taking you on the river into the jungle and stop to see many birds, monkeys and crocodile and eventually tapir. The guide is really knowledgeable and this is a fun way to get closer to the jungle. 2 hours. M$2200 (Dec 2023). You can kayak back for an extra fee
  • Jungle hike 3 hours guided walk in the jungle. M$2500 (Dec 2023)

There is no ATM in town. So bring enough cash. The eco lodge accepts cards with 2.5% surcharge.

There is a few small shops in town selling snacks and drinks.

The main option to sleep is the eco lodge but people in town also offer rooms for cheaper.

  • Visiting the Mayan ruins of Yaxchilan with a boat ride from the town of Frontera Corazol. The town is also an official border crossing (by boat) to Guatemala.
