Sveagruva is a coal mining settlement in on the south coast of the main island of Spitsbergen on Svalbard, with no permanent population. The mining activities have stopped, but maintanence work is carried out by personnel flewn in from Longyearbyen.

Get in[edit]

Sveagruva is a company town and not really set up to handle visitors. It is owned by Store Norske Spitsbergen Kulkompani AS, which has its Main Office at Sjøområdet at Longyearbyen.

The tiny airstrip here only serves the company's charters, and cruise ships are not welcome. Most of the very, very few tourists who make it this far trek from Longyearbyen, a solid 3-day hike each way across some demanding terrain.
