Szklarska Poręba (ger. Schreiberhau) is a ski resort in Lower Silesian Voivodeship and a gateway to Karkonosze National Park in Giant Mountains. It is year-round destination both for hiking, skiing and simple leisure.

History

Town originated around 13th century when glassworks were founded in the area. As this industry required lots of wood to function it resulted in logging activity from which name of the town originates. Town was owned from the Middle Ages until 1945 by Silesian house of Schaffgotsch. During its early period many independent miners came into this area in search of gold and amethysts.

By 19th century Szklarska Poręba a collection of about 26 villages began forming town centre which in 1870s transformed into resort destination. Views and glass working brought many tourists into this place. At the turn of the century, town started attracting artists from all Germany becoming important hotspot of culture.

After Second World War became popular among new communist elite of Poland and in 1947 Cominform was founded here during a conference of communist parties. After fall of communism town fell behind the more liked Karpacz, however it still remains one of the most popular ski resorts in Poland.

By car

Town is easily reachable by DK3 and DK5 from Wrocław and road nr. 10 from Prague. Parking may be an issue in the town and usually it is paid. It is good to check with your lodging if it has parking space for your car.

By train

Szklarska Poręba Górna is closest to city centre and reachable by PKP Intercity from Wrocław and Koleje Dolnośląskie from Wrocław and Liberec

If you are healthy this may be the most practical way of getting around the town especially if you are in the upper, central part of the town. Town is 4 km long at most and you should be able to reach anything by walk, though distances may be longer than they appear on map as town is hilly.

  • 1 Kamieńczyk Waterfall (Zackelfall). tallest waterfall in Sudetes at 27 metres of height, water creates small canyon after cascades, quite close to the town 12 zł.
