Understand
[edit]Friedrichstadt was founded as a planned community in the 17th century to house religious refugees from the Netherlands. While it never achieved the grandiose plans of becoming a big city, it did attract subsequent waves of immigration and attained a reputation for remarkable religious tolerance which can still be seen in churches of numerous different denominations. The urban design is also remarkably "dutch" with waterways reminiscent of the canals of Amsterdam.
