Sabi Sand Game Reserve is in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. This private game reserve consists of 65 000 hectares of land and is adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Sabi Sands Game Reserve provides those interested in taking part in a safari with various game lodges and tented accommodation.

History

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve was established in 1934 as a private game reserve by several landowners. In 1965, it became a private nature reserve, and game viewing lodgescwere opened to visitors. The park in now held by third and fourth generation owners.

Landscape

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve forms a part of the Kruger National Park, which is 2.3 million hectares. No fences are erected between the two parks, allowing the animals to roam freely and therefore have more space. Two rivers run through the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and these rivers are the Sabi River and the Sand River which supply the animals with a valuable water source.

Wildlife

There are more than two hundred species of animals that reside in the Sabi Sand Reserve as well as the Big 5 animals that you are likely to spot in the Sabi Sand which include lion, elephant, white rhino, leopard, cheetah, buffalo, giraffe, hippopotamus, buffaloes, zebras and more.

Flora and fauna

The flora and fauna are the same as that found in the Kruger National Park and there are thousands of plant varieties in the Sabi Sand Game reserve.

Climate

South Africa is lucky to have many hours of sunlight during summer and winter months. The Sabi Sand experience rain during spring and summer and winter and autumn consist of dry and colder weather than the warmer months.

You can enter the Sabi Sand Game reserve by plane or car.

Car There are three entrances to Sabi Sand – the Shaws Gate, the Newington Gate and the Gowrie Gate. Once you confirm the booking of your game lodge or tented accommodation, be sure to find out which gate you should entire the park from.

Air From Johannesburg, it will take you an estimated one hour to fly to Sabi Sand Game Park. Certain game lodges consist of their own airstrip or an airstrip that is close by. Flights can be organised by your lodge accommodation.

Both guided walks and game drives are conducted by game rangers.

Abide by rules given by the Sabi Sand Game Reserve in order to have a pleasurable experience.

Make sure that you stick to the speed limit given as the Sabi Sand is not a speeding area and you will be fined.

Stay in your car or guided truck until stated otherwise there are areas in the Sabi Sand Game Reserve that you are able to exit your car in order to relax and admire the environment but there are also designated areas which allow no car exiting.

There is only park exploration and park driving during the day. Some guided tours offer a night drive but you are not allowed to drive in your own vehicle at night inside the Sabi Sand Game Reserve.
