Yame (八女) is a city in Fukuoka prefecture.

[edit]The name "Yame" (八女) comes from a passage in the Nihon Shoki, the oldest text of Japanese history and legends, that states that a goddess named Yame Tsuhime lives in the mountains in this area, so the city is named after her.
Yame tea (八女茶) is one of the largest Japanese tea production areas, and as famous as other places like Shizuoka, Uji and Chiran.

[edit]- Yametsuhime Shrine (八女津媛神社). The shrine was built in the mountains where the mountain goddess Yame Tsuhime is said to reside according to the Nihon Shoki. The city is named after her. It is said to have existed here for 1300 years.
- Yame-Fukushima Historic District (八女福島). A historic preservation district of white-walled storehouses from the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho periods.
