The dive site Bass Lake or Glen Douglas Quarry is an inland flooded quarry in the (locality name) area on the (topographical feature), near Vereeniging in the Gauteng province of South Africa.

Understand

This lake is used primarily as a training location for Johannesburg-based Open Water diver training schools, along with Miracle Waters.

An entrance fee is charged to divers.

Position

Bass Lake is situated at 26°30'33.69"S, 28° 4'0.75"E.


Access is via the R59 - take the Henley Drive offramp, and follow signs.

This site is not in a Marine Protected Area. A permit is not required.


Depth

Maximum depth is 22m.

Visibility

Visibility is poor, from 6 metres down to 2 or less after much diving during the day.


Topography

Bass Lake is a flooded Dolomite quarry located South of Johannesburg, close to Vereeneging, with a 10 hectare surface area.


Conditions

Water is fairly warm, however there is a noticeable thermocline at approximately 8 metres. The water is very still, with no waves.

  • Diving gear is available to rent.
  • There is a restaurant, ablution facilities, and a number of lapas available to divers.
  • Camping is permitted, however the main gate is locked overnight.
