Africa > North Africa > Libya > Gaberoun

Gaberoun is a small former Bedouin village on a wonderful oasis, around 150 km west of Sabha in the North African country of Libya.

Understand

History

A small tribe inhabited the oasis, the ruins of their settlement are scattered between the palms at the north-western shore of the lake, the exact dates of original occupation of the village is unknown. There are Bedouins who say the site has been occupied for many hundreds of years.

Climate

Hot! The highs are high but be aware, the nights can be cold.

Get in

Drive from Sabah, its around 3-4 hours in reasonable Jeep conditions.

See

The oasis, this is why it's famous. The village is not fully inhabited any more, but the tickle of tourists that do get to this place are met usually by some locals who sell accommodation for the night, tea and some local hand made souvenirs.

Do

Chill out, and relax on the oasis shores that, although salty, are wonderfully refreshing.

Buy

Local souvenirs.

Sleep

Local accommodation, that is just basic sleeping huts can be hired at a very low cost. But remember to take your own sleeping bag(s) and other sleeping comforts for a great night sleep.

Stay safe

Be careful with local animals, sand snakes are common and can be found in shaded areas, but an altercation is rare.

Go next

Drive to Sabah, or if you really want to test yourself, hitch ride with a trader, or go solo into the unknown.
