Appearance
Józefów is a town in the Roztocze range in Lubelskie, Poland. It lies 24 km east of Biłgoraj, 30 km southwest of Zamość and 92 km south of the regional capital Lublin.
Understand
[edit]Before the Second World War about 60% of the town's population was Jewish. In July 1943 Nazis killed 1,500 of them during the Józefów Massacre. Nowadays there is a monument on the location of the massacre to commemorate these cruel acts.

Get in
[edit]The train station of Józefów is about 3 kilometers away from the town center so it does not make a good option. A better option is to take a bus from Biłgoraj or Zamość. From Biłgoraj these buses run frequently.

[edit]- 1 Synagogue, pl. Wolności 10. Built at the end of the 18th century and devastated by the Nazi-Germans during the Second World War, this synagogue got rebuilt in the 80s of the previous century to house a public library. The top floor has been redesigned to use as guest rooms.
- 2 Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Wojska Polskiego. In the eastern part of the town between 1883 and 1886 this church was on the location of a previous wooden church. Free.
- 3 Kirkut. Very close to the quarries you can find the former Jewish cemetery, also called the Kirkut. This Kirkut is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in the Lublin region. The oldest matzevah dates back to 1737 and the last documented burial here took place in 1943. Today the cemetery is surrounded by a fence. The gate usually is open during the daytime. Free.
- 4 Quarries, Kamienna. South of the town are some abandoned stone quarries that are open to the visitors. There was built a visitor observation tower and the quarries are accessible. Free.
