Jump to navigation Jump to search

Cabras sits about 7 km from Oristano on the West coast of Sardinia. The Sinis peninsula is an important international site for flora and fauna and home to many fascinating cultural treasures, the most stunning of which is Tharros. Beaches in this part of Sardinia are stunning and natural. Is Aruttas, Putzu Idu, Mari Erme and Torregrande are all worth mentioning.

One of the best local festivals (there are many) is the barefoot race held on the first weekend of September. Three thousand men from Cabras run barefoot dressed in white to the village of San Salvatore where they re-enact an ancient feud over a religious statue. The statue is carried back from San Salvatore. It is a tremendous spectacle to watch; physically exhausting and painful.

Celebrity chef Rick Stein visited Cabras and recommended Il Caminetto restaurant for their fish dishes. It is open Tuesday-Sunday. There are a multitude of local restaurants all serving excellent cuisine. The restaurant at La Spinnaker is good but busy at weekends, other good restaurants can be found at Torregrande or on the Torregrande road to Oristano. Agriturismo restaurants such as Su Soi on the Cabras road to Nuraxi offer visitors a taste of traditional local foods.
