Kranjska Gora is a town in north-western Slovenia. It is a base for winter sports and is known for alpine skiing and ski jumping.
Get in
There are regular buses to and from Ljubljana and Jesenice (which has the nearest railway station). There are also two buses a day to and from Bled. Those with a car can also cross over the nearby border with Austria or Italy. In summer there is Bus connection from Bovec - Vršič pass - Kranjska Gora.
Get around
Kranjska Gora is very small; one can walk from one end to the other in under 15 minutes.
See
Kranjska Gora is a ski resort, and is therefore rather sterile. However, its surroundings are breathtaking. Nearby is a picturesque lake with a statue of the Zlatarog, the mythical guardian of Mount Triglav. His face appears on the Slovenian beer, Laško. 5 km from Kranjska Gora to Vršič Pass you can see a Russian chapel, where more than 110 Russian POWs died in an avalanche while building a road through Vršič Pass in World War I.
Do
- Skiing and snowboarding at Vitranc.
- Hiking and cycling in the summer. Walking maps are available locally. Warning regarding these maps- "paths" that are not recommended routes may well lead you to an impassable scree. Paths labelled as "rather difficult" tend to involve scrambling, sometimes in places with considerable exposure where hand-holds tend to be rather unreliable. Paths labelled "very difficult" are for the suicidal!
- Mountain biking is available at the Fun Bike Park Kranjska Gora.

Sleep
Kranjska Gora itself has a number of hotels. About 2km away is the very pleasant small village of Podkoren, home to Pr'Tatko youth hostel, which is probably the cheapest place to stay in the area and is in a very nice old building. It has a fully equipped kitchen, friendly staff and a very friendly cat. Across the road is a hotel, which has a bar that is open to non-residents.
