Whitewater is a city in Walworth County, Wisconsin.
Understand
Founded in the 1850's by settlers from New England, Whitewater, like many towns in the area, grew around a gristmill.
Beginning in the second half of the nineteenth century, Whitewater became an increasingly large center of Spiritualism with Morris Pratt, a prominent Spiritualist, establishing the Morris Pratt Institute in town in 1889. The Institute operated until the 1930s. This contributed to much of the local lore around Spiritualists and associated them with witches. For this reason, Whitewater is sometimes known as the "Second Salem." The town does celebrate this history to some extent.
