Drayton Valley is located between the North Saskatchewan River and the Pembina River. It is surrounded by Brazeau County where the main industry is oil and gas, with agriculture and forestry also playing roles in the local economy.

By car

Drayton Valley is on Highway 22 (Cowboy Trail), about 1 hour and a half southwest of Edmonton. Travellers can either drive 20 km (12 mi) south on Highway 2 to Leduc, then follow Highway 39 west for 104 km (65 mi); or travel 88 km (55 mi) west on Highway 16 to Entwistle, then follow Highway 22 south for 41 km (25 mi).
