Boone is the birthplace of Mamie Eisenhower, former First Lady of the United States (1953-1961). It is also home to the IMCA Super Nationals.

Nearby communities include the cities Boone (pop. 12,811), Madrid (pop. 2,211), and Ogden (pop. 2,011).

  • Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad, 225 10th St, toll-free: +1 800-626-0319.
  • Ledges State Park (4 mi S of Boone). A popular park centered around a wooded canyon with sandstone bluffs rising above a tributary of the Des Moines River. A winding one-way road (which regularly closes due to flooding) runs through the canyon, crossing the stream at several points. The park features 13 miles of hiking trails along with fishing and canoeing on the Des Monies River, 95 campsites, and some lovely picnic spots.
  • High Trestle Trail (18 mi S of Boone). Rural area with lengthy walking, biking and hiking trails highlighted by the High Trestle Trail Bridge, a 1/2-mile, 13-story high bridge offering scenic views of the Des Moines River valley. A popular Iowa tourist attraction, the bridge is framed by a unique, inverted steel frame design that lights up after dark.
