Manado Indonesia (bahasa Indonesia Manado), is spoken by the Manadonese and some Minahasa people, primarily of North Sulawesi (Sulawesi Utara), Indonesia. Manado Indonesian is spoken as the first language throughout the cities of Manado and Bitung, and throughout the Minahasa region, along with the smaller islands off the north coast of North Sulawesi. Manado Indonesian is also the first language, though to a lesser extent in Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi (Sulawesi Tengah).
Of notable importance is the direct effect of the former Dutch colonial rule for nigh-on 300 years, which was very strong especially in the Manado area. This is noticed by the many Dutch loanwords (along with Dutch influences in some Manado family names) still found in Manado Indonesian.
Pronunciation guide
Manado Malay is a purely spoken language, and there is no official standard orthography. However, the language is closely related to standard official or 'high' Malay, and is rendered here using Malay spelling rules.
