Vuolijoki is a rural village and former municipality in Kainuu, Finland, today part of Kajaani.

Vuolijoki is located near Lake Oulujärvi, which is the fifth largest lake in Finland. Vuolijoki was merged with the town of Kajaani on 1 January 2007.

Get in

Regional road 879, which starts at highway 28, runs through the village center of Vuolijoki. This highway can be reached from the European road E63 in the southern part of Kajaani.

  • 1 Vuolijoki Church (Vuolijoen kirkko), Kivikirkontie 3. The only greystone church in the Kainuu region, with a building style representing national romance and Art Nouveau. The church can accommodate about 400 people and has a 13-voice pipe-organ.
  • 2 Vuolijoki Cemetery (Vuolijoen hautausmaa), Papintie 2.
  • 3 Riihipiha Museum (Riihipiha-museo), Kuusirannantie 67 (Signs guide visitors to the museum area from road 879.), +358 44 976 7132, . W–Su 11:00 – 17:00 (from 18 June to 15 August). The museum area were brought to exhibit the old courtyards of the Kainuu region from the end of the 1800s and early 1900s. The speciality of the area is a thatced building, pettulato, made of pine logs whose bark was used in making bread during years of famine 1917-1918. It also includes a village shop and bank museum, and sections that describe the activities of the Lotta Svärd and Civil Guard organisations.
  • 4 Vuolijoki Summer Theatre (Vuolijoen kesäteatteri), Mustikkakankaantie 12, +358 44 377 7287, . A summer theatre located in the Pentinpuro village.
