Mikurajima (御蔵島) is one of the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo.

The island is administered as a municipality, Mikurajima Village. The local tourist association has a Japanese-only guide site.

Get in

Tokai Kisen operates ferries to Mikura from Takeshiba Terminal (竹芝客船ターミナル) in Tokyo, adjacent to Takeshiba station on the Yurikamome line. The boat leaves Tokyo each night and arrives at Mikura Island the following morning. The boat continues to Hachijojima, returns to Mikura in the afternoon and arrives back in Tokyo in the early evening.

There is little to see or do on the island except to swim with dolphins. The island has become a major research site for studying dolphins in the wild. There a numerous boats that take visitors out to the ocean and allow snorkelers to get extremely close to the dolphins. Scuba diving is not allowed.

  • Jiromaru Guesthouse. (二郎丸). The oldest guesthouse in Mikura island, the current building was completed in 2020. The food is usually Japanese food such as sashimi, tempura or soba with special ingredients from the island such as the spicy endemic ashitaba plant and fresh fish from the sea around Mikura, but if there is need, Western food can also be cooked. The staff there can speak English @yen;6500 (including food).
