Avranches is a town on the coast in the south-west corner of Normandy, at the base of the Cotentin Peninsula. Mont Saint-Michel is quite nearby.
The town was liberated by American troops during the Normandy campaign after the D-Day invasion of World War II; there is a monument.

There is some free parking places near the tourist office but it can be difficult to find a space, more spaces available near the Le Jardin des Plantes.
