The Coonawarra is a wine-making region in the Limestone Coast region of South Australia, 50 km from Mount Gambier and 10 km west of the Victorian border.


Penola is the larger town at the southern end of the Coonawarra region. The small town of Coonawarra is in the middle.

The key attraction of the Coonawarra region is the many cellar doors that offer the opportunity to taste and buy the wines made from grapes grown in the district.

The centre of the Coonawarra district is the Riddoch Highway which runs north-south along the top of the slight ridge of red soil.

Many of the wineries here operate restaurants where you can have lunch overlooking the vineyards.

They have been making wine in the area for a very long time, and producing world-renowned Coonawarra reds due to the special combination of sun and soil. It's a very small area, and a number of wineries have been established on the fringes and just outside the Coonawarra which produce wines almost indistinguishable from the Coonawarra versions.

The wineries are strung out along a relatively short stretch of road.
