Appearance
Lutherstadt Eisleben is in Saxony-Anhalt. It is best known as the birth and death town of the 16th century Protestant reformer Martin Luther. Nowadays it is a small and calm town of about 22,400 inhabitants (as of 2021).

[edit]Eisleben is about 15 km north of the Autobahn A38 Halle-Göttingen. From the exit "Eisleben", drive along B180 towards the city and follow the signs (B180 itself passes the city on the eastern side).
By train
[edit]Regional trains between Halle and Kassel stop at Eisleben railway station, about 1 km south of downtown. The train runs hourly, on weekdays even more frequently.

[edit]- 1 Helfta Monastery (Kloster Helfta). At the Romanesque Road (Straße der Romanik). The one world-famous Cistercian monastery was founded by Gertrude the Great in the late 13th century, but closed during the Reformation in 1522. Nowadays it has been reconstructed and since 2000 nuns live here once again.
- 2 Martin Luther's birth house (Luthers Geburtshaus), Seminarstraße 16. Apr-Oct: daily 10:00-18:00, Nov-Mar: Tu-Su 10:00-17:00. The oldest museum in Germany and one of the oldest in the world. The birth house and death house of the 16th century Protestant reformer are inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List together with sites in Wittenberg.
- 3 Martin Luther's death house (Luthers Sterbehaus), Andreaskirchplatz 7. Tu-Su 10:00-17:00, in the summer 10:00-18:00. A museum, just like Luther's birth house.

[edit]- Eisleber Wiesenmarkt. September. A yearly fair, takes place the 3rd weekend each September. Wiesenmarkt has a history of over four centuries, draws people from all over the region and is the main event in the town.
