English: An information plaque at the Shaheed Smarak (lit. Martyr's Memorial Meerut) situated in Meerut containing the names of the 85 soldiers of the 3rd Bengal Light Cavalry who, in May 1857, refused to use the tallow-greased cartridges for the then new Pattern 1853 Enfield Rifle and were subsequently court-martialled; sparking off the 1857 First War of Indian Independence.
हिन्दी: मेरठ, भारत स्थिर शहीद स्मारक की एक सूचना पट्टी जिस पर तीसरी बंगाल लाइट कैवलरी के उन 85 सैनिकों के नाम लिखे हैं जिन्होंने मई 1857 में तब नई आई पैटर्न 1853 एनफ़ील्ड राइफ़ल की चर्बी लगी कार्टरिजों का प्रयोग करने से इनकार कर दिया था। परिणामस्वरूप इनका कोर्ट-मार्शियल किया गया था जिसके नतीजतन 1857 का प्रथम भारतीय स्वतंत्रता संग्राम छिड़ा। |
