Gătaia is a town in Timiș County, Banat, Romania.

Gătaia, together with its belonging five villages, is in southwestern Romania, on the national road DN58 linking Timișoara with Reșita, 52 km away from Timișoara and 47 km away from Reșita.

  • 1 Săraca Monastery (Mănăstirea Săraca). It is located in the middle plain of Banat, in the area Șemlacul Mic, Gătaia, 67 km south of Timișoara. The exact date of the foundation is not known, the first official document dates back to the year 1270. Franciscan sources from the 15th century, state that the monastery was a "nursery of schismatics", center of resistance against the attempts of Catholicism of the Christians in Banat.
