Højer is a town of 1,100 people (2022) in South Jutland in Tøndermarsken right at the Wadden Sea National Park.
Højer is an old marsh town, built behind dykes in one of the most sparsely populated areas in Denmark. It is a small industrial town with, among other things, furniture factories and the company Højer Pølser, which is known in most of the country for its southern Jutland sausages.

[edit]In general, Højer town is characterized by old houses and farms from the 18th and 19th centuries.
On the square is the Marskhotellet, which was built in 1888. The side building, popularly called Falles Hus, is today also part of the hotel. The hotel was once called the Bahnhof Hotel, and has since had several different names.
Get in
[edit]Højer is 8 km from Rudbøl, 12 km from Tønder and just over 26 km from Skærbæk.
By bus
[edit]There is a bus to Højer from Tønder Monday to Friday.

[edit]- 1 Højer Mølle, ☏ +45 74782911. Apr-Oct: 10:00-16:00. Old Dutch windmill from 1857, which is the tallest of its kind in northern Europe. It is also a museum covering the history of the mill and the surrounding area. Højer Mølle and the two associated granaries are today part of Museum Sønderjylland, and house an exhibition about the Gate to Tøndermarsken. Here you can get an introduction to the history of the marsh and the human struggle with and against the water. 30 kr.
- 2 Højer Lock. The lock at the mouth of the Vidå river. Very nice place for experiencing the Wadden Sea landscape.
- 3 Trøjborg Castle ruin (at Ribe Landevej north of Tønder). 08:00 - sunset. Old ruin with a moat. free.
- 4 Højer Kirke. Tufa stone church built in the second half of the 13th century. In the 14th century, earth was filled up around the building to prevent flooding during storm surges, which makes the church appear lower than it is.
- 5 Højer Watertower. Visit the old watertower for a nice overview of the town
- One of the city's older houses, Lise's House, was built in 1708. In the garden of the house there is a reconstruction of Højer's old town well from 1807.
- In Nørregade is Hindrichsens Gaard, a building from 1760 with a distinctive gabled house and a large thatched roof. The building served for many years as the town's grocery store.

[edit]- A little south of Højer, the Vidåen continues to the west through the marshes to Højer Lock and all the way to the dykes at Vidå Lock. At the latter lock there is a nature exhibition about the Wadden Sea and the marsh, and in the summer visitors can go seal watching with excursion boats.
