The town was founded in 1865. It is well-known about Altia’s Koskenkorva manufacturing plant, located in the 1 Koskenkorva village, which produces ethanol as a raw material for Koskenkorva Viina, a clear spirit drink in Finland. Also known as “Kossu”, Koskenkorva has become one of Finland's most recognized brands, domestically and internationally.

By car[edit]

The main routes to Ilmajoki are Highway 67 (from Kaskinen to Seinäjoki via Kurikka; known as Kurikantie and Seinäjoentie) and Highway 3 (E12) (from Tampere to Vaasa; known as Vaasantie).

By bus[edit]

Direct bus route is available from Seinäjoki. Timetables are available from Matkahuolto.

By plane[edit]

2 Seinäjoki Airport, located in Ilmajoki, is nowadays used only for some charter flights. The nearest airport with regular flights is 3 Vaasa Airport (VAA IATA), located in Vaasa.
