Jining was an independent city before it became a district of Ulanqab Prefecture.
Jining is a railway hub; trains come in from Erenhot to the north, Hohhot and Baotou to the west, and the mining city Datong to the south. The Trans-Mongolian branch of the Trans-Siberian railway passes through the city.
